Manhattan Landmark
Built in 1926 by Ralph Walker, the Barclay-Vesey building served as the headquarters for the NY telephone company and is widely considered by architects and historians as the first art deco skyscraper. A pioneer of design, Walker was awarded the Architectural League of New York's gold medal of honor for 1927 for fine expression of the new industrial age. Located on the western tip of Manhattan at Battery Park, the Barclay-Vesey is known for its ornate décor. Symbolizing the telephone, there are bells carved into limestone archways above each exterior doorway and the marble-walled lobby features ceiling murals that depict how human communication has progressed, from Aztec runners to the telephone.
